False alerts after 10.3.1

zixunzixun
After upgrading to 10.3.1 from 10.2.0, Serverscheck keeps reporting all of our websites and VMware hosts are down when they are in fact up and running perfectly fine and the Test Settings button consistently returns OK for all the monitors. We've tried to reboot Serverscheck box twice now. Deleting and recreating the monitor hasn't fixed the issue. Please help.

The specific errors are:

Website URL content monitor - 500 Status read failed - Unknown error

VMware host health monitor - Could not connect VMware ESX server

Firstly, please make sure your lic file is updated. You'll know that it is if it doesn't give you the freeware indication on the title page of the browser.

If confirmed, kindly do a debug on the monitoring manager as indicated on the following link and inform us of the log during the time that ServersCheck detected it as down.

    http://wiki.serverscheck.com/index.php/Monitoring_debug
  • License is fine and we have sent the debug log through to support email address.

It appears to be happening to all (and only) our https checks. If the check is edited to http, the check turns to OK. Change it back to https and it goes down again.

The https pages can be seen on a browser if logged in to the serverscheck machine using the same account the service runs as, so there's no firewall or permissions issue. Also the checks were working immediately prior to the upgrade.

    PS. I work with Zixun.
  • AdministratorAdministrator
I see. But let us kindly consider continuing the conversation started on the ticket for a more organized trail.
  • We have, haven't we? As I said the license is updated and the debug log email through.
  • AdministratorAdministrator
Can you run the webserver in debug mode and do a test settings on the check?

Please reply with the debug mode

In 10.3.1 nothing was changed for the HTTPS or HTTP check
  • Hopefully this is what you're after

So when doing test settings it works - correct?
  • Yes.
  • Hello. What's next please.... Can I roll back to 10.2? or use the executables from 10.2?
  • AdministratorAdministrator
Hello. As advised, since we already have an ongoing ticket for this case, let's collate all our thoughts there. Thank you.
  • Well, we are!

Anyway... We have had to rebuild from scratch. Good 8 hours work.
  • AdministratorAdministrator
What do you mean with rebuild?

    Does it work now?
  • New Windows machine, new ServersCheck installation, and manually add all the checks agains.

    It works now, yes.

To be honest, I would have liked better support since we are paying annual fees. OK, yes we are entitled to the newest version in our fees, but in this case the upgrade broke our installation.

At one point I was advised to run the checks in console mode and watch it until the service crash, then quickly read the console. The respose times, apart from on a couple of occasions has been very slow, considering this software monitors our environment! And we have needed to share information publically. We had an email ticket too, but still sometimes over 24 hours before a response, that ended up being 'please reinstall'. If you're arguement is that the fees are cheap, create a premium support agreement, with real SLA's and phone support.

And one last thing, although yes it's a pain, but IE is very popular browser, please add support for it both on the serverscheck console, and the serverscheck website.

    Thank you.

You didn't need to manually do that. You can copy a configuration using the instructions in the user manual (http://wiki.serverscheck.com). Simply copy your /conf subdirectory and you are good to go.

    http://wiki.serverscheck.com/index.php/Backup_Configuration_%26_Move

We have a premium support available as part of the PREMIUM edition of the software. The purchase was made by your company for the entry level with basic support. One has a choice at time of purchase.

The fact that a clean install made it work again shows that it wasn't the software but something else that broke it. An upgrade merely replaces exe files and doesn't change anything else.

It is always recommend (and common best practice in the IT industry) to test an upgrade prior to putting it into production, especially if it is critical like you state. For example if you have it installed on a VM Ware server, you can take a snaphost of the server before doing the upgrade and if you have an issue, you can easily roll back.

Not sure if you are running any Antivirus software on that system but if you do, then you might have experienced what has happened to other customers in the past. As a component changes, the AV no longer trusts it and can block network access for it. This would happen after an upgrade.
  • The files in the conf were so messy. The original installation was from many years ago and has been upgraded and moved a number of times since then, and it doesn't seem like ServersCheck does a very good job of cleaning up (and migrating) old data. Probably why it was broken.

So we opted to start from scratch.

We don't get the option of premium support. And we don't want/need more that 250 checks at this stage.

I disagree. I think the upgrade did break it, nothing else is installed on that machine and the upgrade was the only thing that was done! I have a feeling the data had been upgraded so many times, that it finally became corrupted for 10.3. I'm going to dump the new conf folder in to the old machine and see what happens.

I should have taken a shopshot but didn't in this case. The upgrade was an attempt to fix another issue on Serverscheck.

We do have AV on it. But definitely not the cause, because we disabled it, and could actually see the packets on our Firewalls, but still marked them as down.

    Hi guys

we have the same problem here.

i have updated yesterday to 10.3 and then i had all my esx servers down

is there an other solution then rebuild
  • DlambrechtDlambrecht
    btw we have premium :)
  • DlambrechtDlambrecht
    same fault

aulting application monitoring_thread2.exe, version 10.0.0.0, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.4937, fault address 0x0002c912.

  • DlambrechtDlambrecht
i did a rebuild of the system with copying the folders like mentioned and have the same problem

Could not connect VMWare ESX Server

When i config the monitor the test says ok but then it goes ofline afther a minute
  • AdministratorAdministrator
    Dlambrecht,

the error message shows that it fails due to a core Windows module ntdll.dll - unfortunately that dll can't be fixed by us.

If you have a second platform available, then try it on there - copy your configuration & database files. If it works then the issue is somewhere at the OS layer or another application running on the host conflicting with our software
  • DlambrechtDlambrecht
    Ok i understand

so the new update is conflicting with windows cause i didnt change anything to windows no updates or nothing can i do a down grade then
  • AdministratorAdministrator
You can't do a downgrade once it is upgraded.

You can try a manual upgrade as detailed in the user manual:

    http://wiki.serverscheck.com/index.php/Upgrade

Especially in critical environments we recommend to apply standard best practices in the IT industry meaning to first test a new release and then put it into production.
